Global Surgical Guidelines

Creating international surgical standards through collaboration with WHO and global partners.

Setting International Standards for Surgical Safety

NESA has played an active role in creating evidence-based surgical guidelines adopted worldwide, most notably through participation in the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives committee where the academy helped construct the concepts behind the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist—a tool that has prevented countless complications in operating rooms globally. The academy has developed and published optimized methods for Cesarean section, vaginal hysterectomy, and minimally invasive procedures, including the document “Primum non nocere” produced in collaboration with WHO, providing practical recommendations for reducing preventable complications with a focus on methods that can be implemented even in resource-limited settings. By issuing evidence-based recommendations distributed at international meetings in London, Oslo, and other major cities, NESA helps ministries of health, hospitals, and surgical societies implement standardized procedures that improve outcomes globally.
